A five legged cat may seem an unusual choice for a self-portrait, but the artist explained that she kept cats, and they were a significant theme in her work. The five legs represent her family – she both grew up in and raised her own family of five.

Louise Bourgeois was a renowned French-American artist and sculptor, best known for her contributions to both modern and contemporary art, and for her spider structures entitled Maman.
